NamibRand & adjoining rangelands

A private nature reserve assembled from former sheep farms, with neighbouring rangelands around it. Naturally sparse desert, not degraded forest.

Real location and documented needs. No Eden site or partnership confirmed.

Documented need

What the published record says.

NamibRand describes a minimal-intervention approach with monitoring, predator and livestock outreach on neighbouring properties, low-impact tourism, and a need for additional funding for special projects — ordinary management is already funded by tourism. Its April 2024 newsletter describes renewed low rainfall following a prolonged drought.

Rainfall description is from April 2024 and says nothing about conditions today.

Our proposal

Desert monitoring, water demand and environmental education

What we would propose here, if local partners wanted it. Nothing below has been agreed.

Proposed environmental focus

Support biodiversity and night-sky monitoring, reduce water demand, and back environmental education already running in the area.

Proposed community focus

Paid local work, guide development and procurement from Namibian suppliers, agreed with the reserve and neighbouring landholders.

Potential contribution — subject to local agreement

What could be useful here.

For the place

  • Biodiversity and night-sky monitoring records
  • Water-use measurement and demand reduction
  • Track and erosion observation
  • Support for existing environmental education sessions

With the community

  • Paid local monitoring, guiding and hosting roles
  • Procurement from Namibian producers and makers
  • Guide and ranger training designed with existing providers
  • Any benefit-sharing agreed in writing with landholders
  • Dignified paid employment
  • Education & youth training
  • Local enterprise & procurement
  • Infrastructure & water access

What we would measure

Indicators, not claims.

Proposed indicators — baseline pending, nothing measured yet. Any baseline would be set by an independent survey agreed locally before work began.

The place, and concept imagery

The first frame is a photograph of the real landscape. The rest is concept imagery; not documentation of this location or of a built Eden Habitat.

Research candidate means the place is real and the need is documented — not that you can book, and not that anyone has agreed to host us.
