Mompantero & Bussoleno

Alpine slopes above Bussoleno and Mompantero, named in Piedmont's plan for restoring land burned in the autumn 2017 wildfires.

Documented need

What the published record says.

After the autumn 2017 wildfires and the slope instability that followed, Regione Piemonte approved an extraordinary restoration plan in 2019 that names Bussoleno, Chianocco and Mompantero.

Documented fire-recovery landscape as of 2019. Some slopes will have recovered since; an updated field assessment would come first.

Our proposal

Fire recovery monitoring with valley forestry work

What we would propose here, if local partners wanted it. Nothing below has been agreed.

Proposed environmental focus

Monitor natural recovery and support locally appropriate assisted regeneration and erosion-aware trail care on forestry-approved ground.

Proposed community focus

Paid local forestry and mountain guiding, and purchasing from valley producers, agreed with the people already doing that work.

Potential contribution — subject to local agreement

What could be useful here.

For the place

  • Recording natural regeneration in monitoring plots
  • Assisted planting only where forestry services direct it
  • Erosion-aware trail maintenance on approved paths
  • Seed collection and nursery support

With the community

  • Contracting valley forestry crews and mountain guides
  • Buying food and materials from valley producers
  • Craft and heritage work paid at professional rates
  • Any training designed with local providers
  • Dignified paid employment
  • Local enterprise & procurement
  • Education & youth training
  • Cultural preservation

What we would measure

Indicators, not claims.

Proposed indicators — baseline pending, nothing measured yet. Any baseline would be set by an independent survey agreed locally before work began.

Place indicators

  • Natural regeneration density in plots

    Baseline pending

  • Plant survival where planting is agreed

    Not yet measured

  • Erosion and slope stability observations

    Not yet measured

Community indicators

  • Paid local forestry and guiding work

    Baseline pending

  • Procurement value with valley businesses

    Not yet measured

  • Locally governed share of any benefits

The place, and concept imagery

The first frame is a photograph of the real landscape. The rest is concept imagery; not documentation of this location or of a built Eden Habitat.

Research candidate means the place is real and the need is documented — not that you can book, and not that anyone has agreed to host us.
