Documented need

What the published record says.

A 2021 peer-reviewed study of these oasis systems compares land use between 2007 and 2018 and reports growing town water demand, scarcity of skilled labour, and terrace farming that has changed and in places been abandoned.

Observations cover 2007–2018. This is not a current farm census, and these villages are not the five UNESCO-listed aflaj.

Our proposal

Terrace and falaj maintenance with farmer-led water priorities

What we would propose here, if local partners wanted it. Nothing below has been agreed.

Proposed environmental focus

Support farmer-led terrace and falaj maintenance, native planting and water monitoring.

Proposed community focus

Paid heritage skills, purchasing local produce, and water priorities that stay with farmers and water institutions.

Potential contribution — subject to local agreement

What could be useful here.

For the place

  • Water-flow and use records through the village system
  • Nursery and planting tasks farmers direct
  • Terrace condition surveys and photo records
  • Harvest-season support where invited

With the community

  • Buying produce at farmer-set prices
  • Paid skilled terrace and falaj work kept with local craftspeople
  • Heritage skills training designed with villages
  • Any hospitality water use subordinate to irrigation
  • Infrastructure & water access
  • Cultural preservation
  • Women-led enterprise
  • Education & youth training

What we would measure

Indicators, not claims.

Proposed indicators — baseline pending, nothing measured yet. Any baseline would be set by an independent survey agreed locally before work began.

The place, and concept imagery

The first frame is a photograph of the real landscape. The rest is concept imagery; not documentation of this location or of a built Eden Habitat.
