Baviaanskloof

A farming and subtropical thicket landscape in the Eastern Cape, where restoration work is already under way with local landowners.

Research candidateLandscape restoration

Real location and documented needs. No Eden site or partnership confirmed.

Documented need

What the published record says.

Research documents degradation of subtropical thicket in this landscape through unsustainable grazing, with losses to soil and carbon function. Baviaanskloof Bewarea is a locally based ecological restoration organisation supporting landowners and livelihoods there.

The degradation research dates from 2009; the local restoration organisation's account is current and undated.

Our proposal

Thicket restoration with landholder-led restoration work

What we would propose here, if local partners wanted it. Nothing below has been agreed.

Proposed environmental focus

Support site-appropriate spekboom and thicket restoration and erosion monitoring, with species chosen ecologically.

Proposed community focus

Landholder-led restoration jobs, nursery supply and paid local teams, agreed locally.

Potential contribution — subject to local agreement

What could be useful here.

For the place

  • Nursery propagation and cutting preparation
  • Planting only on ecologically suitable thicket sites
  • Erosion and plant-survival monitoring
  • Record keeping for restoration plots

With the community

  • Paid restoration teams and nursery work kept local
  • Purchasing food and services from valley businesses
  • Training designed with existing restoration organisations
  • Written agreement on how any value is shared
  • Dignified paid employment
  • Local enterprise & procurement
  • Education & youth training
  • Locally governed benefit-sharing

What we would measure

Indicators, not claims.

Proposed indicators — baseline pending, nothing measured yet. Any baseline would be set by an independent survey agreed locally before work began.

Place indicators

  • Plant survival in restoration plots

    Baseline pending

  • Thicket cover and condition

    Not yet measured

  • Soil loss and erosion features

    Not yet measured

Community indicators

The place, and concept imagery

The first frame is a photograph of the real landscape. The rest is concept imagery; not documentation of this location or of a built Eden Habitat.
