Cabo de Gata–Níjar

Marine meadows and the coast around San José, inside the Cabo de Gata–Níjar protected area. The place and its documented needs are real; nothing Eden is confirmed here.

Real location and documented needs. No Eden site or partnership confirmed.

Documented need

What the published record says.

Andalucía's LIFE Posidonia programme documented damage to Posidonia seagrass from recreational anchoring in this protected area, and carried out conservation and mooring work in response.

Historical programme evidence from 2011–2015, not a 2026 survey. A current field assessment would be needed.

Our proposal

Seagrass protection with paid local marine guiding

What we would propose here, if local partners wanted it. Nothing below has been agreed.

Proposed environmental focus

Protect seagrass meadows and keep coastal access low-impact, inside whatever the protected-area authority permits.

Proposed community focus

Paid local marine guiding, fishing and food supply, with access and procurement decided by local operators and the authority.

Potential contribution — subject to local agreement

What could be useful here.

For the place

  • Shoreline litter audits under local direction
  • Shore-based species and anchoring records
  • Underwater survey support only with qualified approved teams
  • Visitor education on anchoring damage

With the community

  • Marine guiding contracted from local operators at their rates
  • Purchasing from Almería fishers and food producers
  • Training pathways discussed with existing guides, not designed for them
  • Any access route agreed with the protected-area authority first
  • Local enterprise & procurement
  • Dignified paid employment
  • Education & youth training
  • Locally governed benefit-sharing

What we would measure

Indicators, not claims.

Proposed indicators — baseline pending, nothing measured yet. Any baseline would be set by an independent survey agreed locally before work began.

Place indicators

  • Seagrass meadow condition in monitored areas

    Baseline pending

  • Anchoring damage incidents recorded

    Not yet measured

  • Shoreline litter volume per survey

    Not yet measured

Community indicators

  • Paid local work supported

    Baseline pending

  • Procurement value with local suppliers

    Not yet measured

  • Locally governed share of any benefits

The place, and concept imagery

The first frame is a photograph of the real landscape. The rest is concept imagery; not documentation of this location or of a built Eden Habitat.

Research candidate means the place is real and the need is documented — not that you can book, and not that anyone has agreed to host us.
